Attributes

There are 6 Attributes in Star Trek as follows. They will range in value between 7 to 12, with 8 representing a average person.

  Control: Used in conjunction with a discipline when the attempted test requires precision, patience or mental resilience (i.e: resist mind melds).
  Daring: Used in conjunction with a discipline when the attempted test requires guts, quick reflexes, instincts, or aggression.
  Fitness: Used in conjunction with a discipline when the attempted test requires strength, stamina, or physical resilience (i.e: resist poison).
  Insight: Used in conjunction with a discipline when the attempted test requires empathy, being open-minded or social perception.
  Presence: Used in conjunction with a discipline when the attempted test requires manipulation, leadership, moving an audience, or social resilience.
  Reason: Used in conjunction with a discipline when the attempted test requires logic, perception, or research.

They are a little different than we are used to as they go beyond the physical and mental limitations of a character and introduce some notions of personality. For example, control isn't just the equivalent of Dexterity, it also measures a person's capacity to be patient and methodical while daring measures your capacity to keep your cool. Thus the same task, let's say, navigating the ship, through a minefield might require control if you can take it slow but will instead use daring if there's a Borg Cube chasing you. You might be the best pilot in the fleet, but if you can't deal with the pressure, you are much more likely to fail.

Likewise, the approach used can influence the attribute used. For example, convincing someone through logical argument is done with Reason, but doing the same by moving a person emotionally requires presence.
